What Caused the Choice Specialty Pharmacy Data Breach?
The Choice Specialty Pharmacy data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. Unfortunately, Choice Specialty Pharmacy has not issued a press release discussing the incident, and the company’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides only limited information on what led up to the breach. Thus, at this point, we don’t know if the data leak was the result of a cyberattack against Choice Specialty Pharmacy or whether hackers obtained the information by targeting one of the company’s vendors in a third-party data breach.
Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Choice Specialty Pharmacy reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.
Unfortunately, Contents Trader, Inc. does not appear to have publicly disclosed the leaked data types. However, only those breaches that impact the protected health information of more than 500 or more individuals must be reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. Thus, despite the dearth of available information, it’s likely that the incident affected victims’ protected health information.
On August 20, 2024, Choice Specialty Pharmacy posted notice of the incident with the HHS-OCR. Typically, this is when companies send out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident; however, the timeframe in the Choice Specialty Pharmacy data breach could vary.
