A coastal retreat house rebuilt after a devastating bushfire has been designed to capture the essence of its Great Ocean Road town.

For sale with a $1.95m price tag, the residence was reconstructed after lightning sparked a fire that swept through Wye River and destroyed more than 100 homes on Christmas Day 2015.

Great Ocean Road Real Estate sales executive Michael Coutts says that after rebuilding out of fireproof materials, the eight-year-old house’s owners lived there before setting it up as short-term rental accommodation.

Mr Coutts says the 26 Durimbil Ave address offers beach, river and valley views taking in Wye River’s two caravan parks, the pub and general store – the attractions and locations that make up much of the Otway Coast township’s soul.

“You do feel connected to the whole lot,” he says.

“The views are epic, it’s unimpeded and will never be built out.”

The house is “on top of the town”.


Floor-to-ceiling, double-glazed windows and doors, including those in the living, dining and kitchen area, make the most of the scenic panorama with an undercover entertainer’s area and a second-storey enclosed balcony taking in the spectacular vistas.

“It’s on a nice-sized piece of land at 1000sq m right at the top of the town,” Mr Coutts adds.

He says the home is a private and peaceful one, boasting two living areas, one on each storey.

Owners can park their car on the same level as the house itself and walk a few steps to the door, an unusual feature in Wye River due to the town’s steep terrain.

Both the upstairs’ bedroom and one of the downstairs’ bedrooms have a walk-in wardrobe and adjoining ensuite bathroom.
