Ecuador judge reinstates vice president Abad after controversial suspension – JURIST
Judge Nubia Vera on Monday reinstated Ecuadorian Vice President Verónica Abad to her role, lifting a five-month suspension imposed by the Ministry of Labor for allegedly abandoning her duties. The ruling declared the sanction unconstitutional, marking a significant development in the escalating feud between Abad and President Daniel Noboa.
The decision comes just weeks before Noboa is expected to request a leave of absence to campaign for reelection in February’s elections. Under Ecuador’s constitution, the vice president assumes presidential duties during the president’s absence, making Abad’s reinstatement critical for the country’s political landscape.
The rift between Abad and Noboa, which began before their inauguration in November 2023, has been fraught with allegations and counterclaims. Shortly after taking office, Noboa appointed Abad as ambassador to Israel, effectively sidelining her from government affairs. Tensions deepened in September when Abad was ordered to relocate temporarily to Turkey amid rising conflict in the Middle East.
Abad has described her suspension as part of a broader campaign of “persecution and abuse of power” orchestrated by Noboa’s administration. In a public letter addressed to the Ecuadorian people, she condemned her sidelining and the alleged militarization of the vice-presidential offices. The vice president also stated her commitment to defending Ecuador’s constitutional democracy, calling upon international organizations to monitor what she described as “serious violations of constitutional rights.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Abad of delaying her move to Turkey by eight days, labeling it an “unjustified abandonment” of her duties. This led to her suspension without pay in November. She argued that the delay was due to inadequate preparation time and the government’s suggestion that she leave her children behind in Israel.
On Monday, Nubia Vera not only reinstated Abad but also ordered the Ministry of Labor to apologize and compensate her for lost wages. Speaking after the ruling, Abad vowed to review the judgment with her team and continue her duties as vice president.
The conflict has broader implications for Noboa’s reelection bid. In a recent interview, Noboa expressed regret over selecting Abad as his running mate, calling it a “mistake.” Despite their strained relationship, Abad’s reinstatement ensures she remains a pivotal figure in Ecuador’s governance during this critical election period.
