Tiny cottage that held out for decades breaks record at auction
A ‘little tiny’ cliffside cottage, whose owners held out for decades against millions up for the taking, has been snapped up for a record price.
David Millar Real Estate head David Millar said “the heavens broke in this little tiny cottage where about 80 people crammed into this tiny living area and bidding started at $3.5m”.
The home is so tiny that “the kind neighbour to the east had offered for us to do it in his double garage”, Mr Millar said, but they managed to squeeze the crowd in, spilling out the door.

“There were 10 registered bidders, and they fought it out to $6.72m”. Property records show no other residential property in the suburb higher than that price level.
Mr Millar said another home about four doors down on the same street sold to the RSL for $6m two years ago which was in similar condition.
The three bedroom house was sold Mr Millar’s son Dave on behalf of trustees of the property, setting a new record for the hot cliffside enclave on McIlwriath Street in Moffat Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
“Anybody who’s anybody now wants to be associated with the Moffat Beach precinct,” Mr Millar senior said.
The quirky A-frame was built in 1970 on a 506sq m block on a street coveted for its stunning uninterrupted direct north views and proximity to all that Moffat Beach has to offer.
“This has unlimited northern views and no traffic between it and the ocean. Unique property is very much moving here.”
He said there were about half a dozen original homes left in the street, with some of those that sold previously going to units.
“This is a unit site, but the purchasers were a young local business couple from Caloundra, and they will be building a residential property on the site.”
“There is a four year old house to the east and an older, renovated, large residence to the west of it.”
Mr Millar was thrilled that his half page advertisements in The Courier-Mail over the holiday period yielded strong results.
Dave Millar listed the property as a premium north-facing ocean frontage site, and a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”.
“Opportunities like this are few and far between in this exclusive precinct, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and vibrant coastal lifestyle.”
The property is just 300 meters from trendy cafes, boutique shops, and the pristine sands of Moffat Beach, he said.
“Unrivalled investment potential, with strong prospects for capital appreciation in this tightly held location. Whether you’re an astute investor, a developer with vision, or a homeowner dreaming of a seaside escape, this property presents endless possibilities.”
The property went under the hammer at 10am on Saturday, January 11.
