Woolworths selling abandoned house near a Geelong West rival


Woolworths is offloading an unoccupied house near a rival supermarket in Geelong West months after neighbours raised concerns about it sitting vacant.

The retail chain has for years owned three properties directly behind Coles in Shannon Ave, which was previously a Safeway supermarket.

It has just listed one of the weatherboard character homes at 118 Albert St, Geelong West, for private sale.

118 Albert St, Geelong West, is on the market for $749,000 to $789,000.

Buxton agent Ben Riddle is handling the campaign but declined to comment on the $749,000 to $789,000 listing.

It’s the first time the 523sq m property has been offered to market in almost 40 years.

While it is not known exactly how long the three-bedroom house has been vacant, CoreLogic records show it was last advertised as a rental in 2012.

There’s no interior photos of the home, which is being marketed as “an exciting opportunity for renovation or alternatively, to design your dream home”.

Woolworths also owns the neighbouring house at 120 Albert St, which was last advertised for lease in 2017 and is now bordered up, and another property in Clarence St.

The property is just one door down from the Coles Geelong West supermarket and across the road from Aldi.

The supermarket giant confirmed late last year that it was reviewing its ownership of the properties following the 700sq m expansion of its nearby store at the corner of Shannon Ave and Aberdeen St.

“Woolworths owns three residential zoned site on Albert and Clarence streets that were historically part of a potential long-term network solution for Geelong,” a spokesman said.

“Given the recent expansion and redevelopment of our Newtown store, we are reviewing the ongoing requirements for these sites.”

Geelong West David Potter had raised concerns about the fact the houses had been bordered up and abandoned for as long as he could remember.

There’s scope to extend into the back yard or knock it down and start again.

He said it was a missed opportunity at a time when the community was crying out for more housing stock.

“It’s prime real estate and there is a housing crisis. It lets the community down,” Mr Potter said.

Of course, a big drawcard of the property, apart from its north-facing aspect, is the fact it’s just steps away from both Coles and Aldi supermarkets, as well as cafes and boutique shops in Shannon Ave and Pakington St.

It’s also close to Sparrow Park and less than 10 minutes from Geelong train station.
